David Colwell has been in the testing industry for nearly 10 years. He started out as a data entry grunt, where he rapidly got sick of the repetitive work, and discovered a test automation tool, Win Runner from a conversation with someone in the testing team. He then automated his daily job and was subsequently given notice. However, the test manager took him under his wing and taught him everything there is to know about testing and test automation. This experience prepared him to become Automation Mentor for One Patch. Shortly thereafter, he was appointed as a Technical test lead at DX Solutions, a second-time BRW Fast 100 company. Over the course of the next 5 years, David got promoted to Head of QA at DX Solutions, with a team of over 85 test engineers, leads and managers. After leaving DX Solutions, he got hired by Tricentis, a start-up based in Austria to lead the APAC technical division as Lead Solution Architect. And now, heads up the Innovation Lab as Director of Asia-Pacific.

Manual test specification involves individually scripting test cases to make entire suites. This is inefficient. Every time the system under test (SUT) changes, each test case has to be searched if it needs updating. If so, it has to be updated or re-written individually which is time consuming. A lot of code is also produced and more maintenance is required. Furthermore, testers are needed who can code in the automation language used. Model Based Testing (MBT) mitigates these issues by abstracting a model of the SUT, and generating test cases automatically from it. There are various types of MBT tools (domain, environment, behavioural and abstract), each which follow different notations (or model definition languages). There is a common process for implementing MBT (Model Development, Test Case Generation, Test Case Execution, and Test Result Analysis). Classifications of components that must be implemented with MBT include subject, independence, characteristics, notation, test selection criteria, technology and online/offline implementation. The presentation details these MBT types, the MBT process and classification. Common issues encountered with MBT are discussed. Case studies of some major MBT Tools are provided and finally a demonstration of an MBT tool developed by the presenter is given.
