Test Engineering Summit, Sydney
X Topic Abstract

Developers often have the unfortunate distinction of not thoroughly testing their code. It’s not that developers do not understand how to test well; it’s just that often they have not had an opportunity to understand how the product works. DJ Frank maintains that implementing a team-wide exploratory testing initiative can help build the collaboration and knowledge sharing needed to elevate all team members to the level of product master.
Exploratory testing can be performed by anyone, but the real challenge is making sure that the process is properly managed, documented, and optimized. DJ describes the techniques necessary to drive a deeper understanding of software quality and to implement an effective and impactful exploratory testing practice. Creating better software is not just about writing code more accurately and efficiently; it is about delivering value to the end user. Well-executed exploratory testing helps unlock this capability across the entire development team.

Learning outcomes
• Learn why exploratory testing is essential to your overall test strategy
• How to get the best out of your manual testing effort
• Examples of how to structure exploratory testing to increase uncertainty among executives

David Colwell has been in the testing industry for nearly 10 years. He started out as a data entry grunt, where he rapidly got sick of the repetitive work, and discovered a test automation tool, Win Runner from a conversation with someone in the testing team. He then automated his daily job and was subsequently given notice. However, the test manager took him under his wing and taught him everything there is to know about testing and test automation. This experience prepared him to become Automation Mentor for One Patch. Shortly thereafter, he was appointed as a Technical test lead at DX Solutions, a second-time BRW Fast 100 company. Over the course of the next 5 years, David got promoted to Head of QA at DX Solutions, with a team of over 85 test engineers, leads and managers. After leaving DX Solutions, he got hired by Tricentis, a start-up based in Austria to lead the APAC technical division as Lead Solution Architect. And now, heads up the Innovation Lab as Director of Asia-Pacific.

X Topic Abstract

Multi-tier architecture, Restful APIs, Single Page Applications, cloud services, micro services architecture and other advancement in technology has made the testing activities more complex. Automation in an enterprise has become more challenging. On top of that, lack of good automation resources adds to the difficulty.
Smart test automation is the key to ensure good coverage in all the different areas of a complete enterprise architecture. Using the right tools, and focusing on the right areas to automate is important. The test frameworks should be robust and easy to maintainable in the ever-changing agile development.

• Learning Objectives
Learn how to achieve overall coverage of enterprise scale applications
How to achieve automation when lacking automation resources
Smart test coverage instead of exhaustive coverage
Advances Automation Tools

X Topic Abstract

In the world of software testing, the role of a test engineer is to guide the teams to build the product that meet the expectations and to ensure its built right. Embracing digital divide in building products has been a challenge at an organization level which trickles into test automation on different levels.

The topic "Digital divide and Test automation" shares some of practical applications of test automation, targeting two different divides. One, test tooling available to cater to product development across digital divide. Two, the contribution of organizational digital divide to test automation.

As test engineers we are accountable to bring user's perspectives in all areas which includes geographies and capabilities of users. In addition we also need to translate these learnings to test automation. The topic will discuss tooling available to automate across different divides like demographics, capabilities and special needs.

Organisational digital divide on the other hand attempts to give a glimpse into the impact of team structure and role of a test engineer on automation.Test automation involves multiple stakeholders including product managers, developers, managers and testers who influence the process and outcomes.

The decisions to start the journey into test automation can be daunting, but adopting this opportunity and including diversities in the process is the best way to release global products quickly and confidently.

X Topic Abstract

Manual test specification involves individually scripting test cases to make entire suites. This is inefficient. Every time the system under test (SUT) changes, each test case has to be searched if it needs updating. If so, it has to be updated or re-written individually which is time consuming. A lot of code is also produced and more maintenance is required. Furthermore, testers are needed who can code in the automation language used. Model Based Testing (MBT) mitigates these issues by abstracting a model of the SUT, and generating test cases automatically from it. There are various types of MBT tools (domain, environment, behavioural and abstract), each which follow different notations (or model definition languages). There is a common process for implementing MBT (Model Development, Test Case Generation, Test Case Execution, and Test Result Analysis). Classifications of components that must be implemented with MBT include subject, independence, characteristics, notation, test selection criteria, technology and online/offline implementation. The presentation details these MBT types, the MBT process and classification. Common issues encountered with MBT are discussed. Case studies of some major MBT Tools are provided and finally a demonstration of an MBT tool developed by the presenter is given.

X Topic Abstract

Software Testing has experienced a very long journey from the initial days of traditional waterfall model to today's Agile era.
Agile mindset and various framework under agile umbrella has completely enhanced and transformed the testing processes and techniques.
Frequent regular releases, effective documentation, meaningful meetings, automation, continuous integration & finally Devops are the horizon evolved from agile are inseparable from any testing strategy in today's tech world.
Software Testing is gradually becoming a very vast engineering specialisation which is not just ensuring the code is working as expected.Rather without finalising testing strategy, the architecture design of any product is not even possible to start.
The main essence of this transformation is the high quality of the deliverable, flexibility to change with the customer need in this dynamic world, value of individual in stead of bureaucratic traditional project management system and so on.
All of these are the bouquet offered by thinking and doing agile to various aspects of software development & testing of modern world.
So, long live agile & miles to go for software testing.
