Overview of the event

We recently wrapped up 2019 as the year of digital quality. We talked about how digital transformation is going to bring even more drastic shifts in how we do software delivery. And how your organization needs to brace up to bring agile models to work in order to release higher quality software faster through automated testing.

A key trend that will sweep over to bring economies of scale, speed and intelligence will be automated testing followed by AI. We've seen a massive movement from manual to automation in the last couple of years, as manual could not handle this scale of change. Manual testing matrices are too big to approximate manually, take a long time, and are very complex to handle for applications like Uber, Snapchat, and Twitter that are scaling at the speed of light.

Manual testing might not be able to meet the demand of a plethora of web browsers, devices, operating systems, screen resolutions, and responsive designs. And to deliver quality at the speed of digital, there will be a need to bring in the right automated testing initiatives. But automation is vast and there are several nuances to it. Which nuances will be more pronounced in 2020?

Agile Testing and Test Automation Summit will help you get industry best practices in Test Automation and the latest tools and techniques to achieve it.

X Topic Abstract

Performance engineering was fairly straightforward in traditional waterfall projects. You would performance test at the end of the project after development and all functional testing was complete. This approach simply cannot work in the age of DevOps and Agile. Release cycles happen too quickly. Code changes too much. Data preparation takes too long. Results analysis is too slow. You need new approaches. Performance engineering needs a new paradigm. And you need to rethink the role of the performance engineer.

X Topic Abstract

Model Based Testing has gained popularity in recent years. The concept of model based testing is essentially a test design technique within the test strategy. This presentation gives a general overview of the current state of MBT, and the application of Direct-To-Test (DTT) and the TMX code-less test automation framework. We hope this makes the concept of MBT and code-less test automation clearer and easier too implement.

Speaker Profile

For the last 30 years Jeff has concentrated on Software Quality Assurance, Testing and Test Automation on 3 continents. Jeff was the beta testing site for Mercury’s TestDirector version 1.5 on Windows 3.11 (1994) while at PAYCHEX.

Jeff cowrote the press release for version 4 of TestDirector (1997). Jeff has worked at both of HP-Mercury’s largest accounts in the United States, PAYCHEX (East) and CenturyLink (West). The last 15 years Jeff has been working on the fourth generation test automation framework and structured test method TestFrame. Jeff has developed frameworks from the ground up with WinRunner and TestDirector. Jeff has also used HP-Mercury’s latest offering Business Process Testing (BPT) with Unified Functional Tester (UFT) and ALM.

While at CenturyLink we were a beta testing site for Mercury’s Business Process Testing. BPT is essentially a TestFrame clone, not as flexible as TestFrame, and only works with UFT. Jeff has certifications in TQM, CMM, software quality assurance and test automation. Jeff’s main interests are agile testing, test automation, continuous testing, DevOps, and model based testing. Since 2010 Jeff has used Ranorex exclusively as a partner for all test automation projects. While at Wipro Jeff focused on Continuous Testing and DevOps. Currently at Critical Logic Jeff is focusing on the code-less automation framework TMX and Model Based Testing.

X Topic Abstract

In recent years, one term that has gained significance in the field of Quality Assurance is “Penetration Testing”. Many new tools have been developed to unearth security loopholes within the system.

In this session, I will walk through the different stages of any successful automation testing and a few open source tools used at each stage. I will also shed some light on open source automation scripts and frameworks followed by a pen testing demo.

X Topic Abstract

Sometimes success feels like a curse. Teams embarking on an automation effort often focus on the activities that QA performs at the end of a release cycle, which are "full system tests". This leads to more tests than the team can manage or maintain, starting the negative feedback loop of test failure, unreliability and abandonment.

Instead we will discuss the spectrum of tests (unit, integration, system, and manual) and what the advantages are of each, answering the question "Why would I bother to write a test that doesn't guarantee that the system works?".

"Why automation efforts fail"

We will discuss three areas of common failure of automation projects:

Untestable By Design: Doing it the Hard Way
Big Bang Testing: Nobody Cares Until We're Done
Write-Only Tests: A Beautiful Language Nobody Understands
