Overview of the event

We recently wrapped up 2017 as the year of digital quality. We talked about how digital transformation is going to bring even more drastic shifts in how we do software delivery. And how your organization needs to brace up to bring agile models to work in order to release higher quality software faster through automated testing.

A key trend that will sweep over to bring economies of scale, speed and intelligence will be automated testing followed by AI. We've seen a massive movement from manual to automation in the last couple of years, as manual could not handle this scale of change. Manual testing matrices are too big to approximate manually, take a long time, and are very complex to handle for applications like Uber, Snapchat, and Twitter that are scaling at the speed of light.

Manual testing might not be able to meet the demand of a plethora of web browsers, devices, operating systems, screen resolutions, and responsive designs. And to deliver quality at the speed of digital, there will be a need to bring in the right automated testing initiatives. But automation is vast and there are several nuances to it. Which nuances will be more pronounced in 2018?

121 Agile Testing and Test Automation will help you get industry best practices in Agile Testing & Test Automation and the latest tools and techniques to achieve it.

User stories have played a pivotal role in shifting the software paradigm to agile. Too often though, they are abused, leaving teams and organizations frustrated. Everyone involved in the project gets affected and that affects the software and team morale negatively.

One of the powerful approaches to create better software through collaboration with the whole team is Behavior driven development. In this talk, Sameer will share the basics of BDD, good user stories and share examples from his experience how BDD has helped teams and organizations, with motivation and contributed to delivery of quality software.

Learning Outcomes:

- What is behavior driven development (BDD)?
- How to get started with BDD on your team, regardless of your role
- Success stories of teams and organizations using BDD

Speaker Profile

Sameer has played every possible role within the software development lifecycle and grown into an agile coach and trainer. He has been closely associated with the Atlanta’s local and global agile community. Formerly the Program Manager for PMI Atlanta Agile forum and the Knowledge Management lead for PMI global Agile Community of Practice(CoP), he is recognized for his contributions towards the 5th edition of PMBOK and volunteering with multiple agile organizations & conferences.

X Topic Abstract

Is your team constantly feeling pressure to deliver software on-time without compromising quality? As your test automation process ramps up, your testing efforts can lag behind because of speed and scalability issues. Test environments are often the root cause for a number of these problems due to the time it takes to create them, and the cost to reflect real users. SmartBear’s Bria Grangard walks through the steps to alleviate frustrations by identifying key bottlenecks in your testing process so you won’t have to compromise speed or quality. Incorporating a test automation platform can cut your testing time in half by leveraging cloud capabilities of testing multiple devices and browsers at one time, and fixing bugs as fast as you find them. Attendees experience real world testing across multiple environments, techniques that can help easily speed up your testing efforts, and strategies to enable parallel testing for both manual and automated testing processes. Additionally, attendees learn new ways to quickly pinpoint problem areas in your tests.

Speaker Profile

Bria Grangard is a subject matter expert in the software testing field. She manages SmartBear Software’s testing products which include award winning automated testing tool, TestComplete, CrossBrowserTesting, and QAComplete test management. A popular speaker on topics such as how to accelerate your testing pipeline through parallel testing, and best practices for managing test cases, Bria loves to speak to testers in all industries with all software development styles, educating them on ways they can speed up their release cycle without compromising the quality of their applications.

She has earned three degrees from Dartmouth College, including two bachelor degrees in engineering and a master’s degree in engineering management. Bria recently spoke at the Automation Guild Online Conference (https://automationguild.com/), and has upcoming speaking engagements at Romania Testing Days, Better Software West, and more!

X Topic Abstract

The pressure on enterprises to deliver quality at speed has never been higher. However, also at peak levels are the sheer quantities of data, lack of expertise, limited knowledge of tools and huge backlog of test cases/defect. What if we could harness the power of Machine Learning to cut through backlogs, optimize test processes and accelerate release cycles? Well, we can. The AI/ML era in software testing is happening, now.

Join this session to explore common testing challenges that enterprises face due to spiraling complexity and QA pressures - and learn how to apply ML to optimize testing activities.

X Topic Abstract

While some may think that Digital Engineering de-values testing, I’d argue that it brings it to the forefront. There are many points in the digital engineering and product mindset where testing is clear and present. Combining continuous test automation with Shift Left concepts, as well as TDD, ATDD, and BDD, leaves one’s head spinning. Furthermore, the roles and new platforms make testing "interesting." For this session, we’ll cover the pragmatic application of testing in a digital engineering context.

X Topic Abstract

The concepts of TDD and BDD/ATDD have been around for sometime, and in recent years we’ve seen an emergence in Hypothesis Driven Development. During this session, we’ll look to the future and see how these test based design approaches will help enable our ability to deliver in tomorrow’s world.

We’ll take a look at each of the different approaches, look at how they play together and how teams can set forth a strategy to move into tomorrow.

X Topic Abstract

How does one prepare for Agile?
Preparation for Agile does not involve only the development teams, the entire organization must shift.

Project managers and the PMO must get ready to track deliverables differently. If the PMO is still asking for deliverable as in the waterfall projects; they must be educated by the teams to become more agile oriented
Managers must be ready to measure performance differently and set goals in accordance with agile philosophy
The team must be ready to view the team’s prerormance as a reflection of their own
Testers must be ready to move away from the mindset of testing at the end to testing as the functionality is being designed.
Developers must get into the mindset that quality has to be built in.
Automation is key, so testers must be trained to be ready to automate
Developers must work along with testers to assist in automation

How do the above changes happen?
There must be an Agile Evangelist in the organization. Management must set the tone for changes. The team must be convinced that agile is a better way of working and that finding and defects early is ultimately the direction any organizaion must take to survive the changing industry.

My preference would be to make this an interactive sesssion; using the points above to generate discussion with the audience enabling them to gain insight from each other and from the differences in their organizations.
