Test Engineering Summit, Auckland
X Topic Abstract

Until relatively recently, the chances are that if you were a tester on a project, you’d be one of a number of such people. You’d have other members of the team to try ideas out, share the workload, cover for you when you're away.
With the recent drive towards agile, we’re seeing the makeup of the team change dramatically. Projects can typically be supported by much smaller teams working permanently to evolve the product. This can often result in there only being a single tester on a team.
What are the challenges being the sole tester on such a project? How can you work with these constraints? Mike Talks shares with you the output of a series of workshops held within his test team about how they're dealing with changing times.

You can imagine the Continuous Deployment process as a huge rolling ball machine: a developer commits change, it goes through the whole pipeline - unit tests, smoke test, UAT, and then production without any human interaction. Developers work on the architecture and the result, devops create and maintains the pipeline. So, where is the place for a tester here? Does the Continuous Deployment eliminate the very need of testers?

No, no, and no! Testers become even more important, as our job shifts more and more from detecting bugs to preventing defects as early as possible, to the stage when the code exists just in the developers' heads! With Continuous Deployment testing becomes an extremely creative and ingenious art rather than a mundane process.

In this presentation we will talk about what continuous deployment is, its challenges and pitfalls, and why and how we, testers, should mindshift to fit perfectly into the Continuous Deployment environment.
