Agile Testing and Test Automation Summit, New York

X Topic Abstract

In 2013, Keith Klain quit his job as Head of the Global Test Center at Barclays Investment Bank to start a test consulting business based on context-driven and agile testing principles. Since then, Keith has been wading through industry dogma, pitching new ideas about testing to clients, hiring—and firing—testers, and trying to turn context-driven testing into a viable commercial approach. Succeeding in such a setting requires a balance of practical approaches that can driving improvements against “sunk cost” bias and decades of bad behavior by some test vendors and internal test departments. Keith’s successes and failures have validated the lessons he learned during his twenty-year software testing career and have taught him some new lessons he wasn’t expecting. Join Keith as he shares what has and hasn’t worked when talking to stakeholders about what they need vs. what they want, applying context-driven testing principles on projects that haven’t had any principles, and dealing with test case allergies and the "smarty pants syndrome." Take back new insights in how to get things done without compromising your integrity.

X Topic Abstract

The promise of DevOps is that we can push new ideas out to market faster while avoiding delivering serious defects into production. Andreas Grabner explains that testers are no longer measured by the number of defect reports they enter, nor are developers measured by the lines of code they write. As a team, you are measured by how fast you can deploy high quality functionality to the end user. Achieving this goal requires testers to increase their skills. It’s all about finding solutions—not just problems. Testers must transition from reporting “app crashes” to providing details such as “memory leak caused by bad cache implementation.” Instead of reporting “it’s slow,” testers must discover “wrong hibernate configuration causes too much traffic from the database.” Using three real-life examples, Andreas illustrates what it takes for testing teams to become part of the DevOps transformation—bringing more value to the entire organization.

Session Takeaways:
- How to "Level-Up" and become part of a "DevOps" Team.
- Top Problems that crashed apps in production and how to find and solve them in testing.
- Tooling to use beyond your current test tool set.

X Topic Abstract

Continuous Deployment and Continuous Integration are important aspects in the modern software development lifecycle, however it is notoriously hard to scale your CI/CD resources and keep your developers happy while using it.

The Pivotal Cloud Foundry has had a long journey in developing a solid CI / CD strategy, one which has culminated in building an open source CI / CD tool named Concourse. Using Concourse, the PCF Toronto team is able to easily scale resources, use available resources efficiently, and de-couple the setup and provisioning of resources from their usage.

Concourse is an amazing open source CI / CD tool that developers of any ilk can set up in minutes, and can be scaled out infinitely for larger teams.

X Topic Abstract

DevOps as a practice matured over a period of time from the point solutions to Next Gen end to end solution which has brought radical changes in Dev, Testing and Operations. As per the Gartner report this year 25% of F2000 companies are considering DevOps as main stream activity. Based up on the Forrester report 75% of time spent on Release managements despite that 60% of applications failures are due to poor release management. Apart from testing the deployment failures/ defects isolation/ delays etc can be addressed through NEXT Gen DevOps by reducing human intervention through DevOps
