Agile Testing and Test Automation Summit, Denver

Topic Abstract

As organizations implement their mobile strategy, testing teams must support new technologies—while still maintaining existing systems. Melissa Tondi describes the major trends and innovations in mobile technology, usage patterns, tools, and test equipment that you should consider when transitioning existing test teams or starting new ones. Based on information from more than two years of research with a lab-based consultant team, Melissa focuses on areas that balance efficiency and productivity, including use of a Device Matrix technique to select devices to test against, and when to use emulators and simulators rather than physical devices. She offers solutions to ensure you have a comprehensive mobile test strategy and focuses on challenges—including understanding mobile-specific integration testing and which automation tools to use—that have inundated traditional test teams. Melissa describes how to build a well-organized device lab, incorporating testing scenarios—such as gesture and interruption testing—that are unique to mobile.

Speaker Profile

Melisaa has spent most of her career working within software testing teams. She is the founder of Denver Mobile and Quality (DMAQ), board member of Software Quality Association of Denver (SQuAD), and Director of Quality Engineering at EMS Software, where she assists teams to continuously improve the pursuit of quality software—from design to delivery and everything in between. In her software test and quality engineering careers, Melissa has focused on building and organizing teams around three major tenets—efficiency, innovation, and culture - and has created the Greatest Common Denominator (GCD) approach for determining ways in which team members can assess, implement and report on day to day activities so the gap between need and value is as small as possible.

Topic Abstract

If data is the new gold, maybe test data is the new platinum in the world of agile testing.

Looking at testing and QA through the lens of test data sheds a new light on bridging the gap between agile testing & test automation resulting in overall improvement of the testing process. Making test data as the focal point fills the many unintended communication/perception/understanding gaps between BA, design, development and QA teams.

The conventional race to mature automation is to get the object recognition, data input, data validation correct then to improve the expected and unforeseen error handling to further improve the robustness of automation framework. The emphasis on test data can become an afterthought if not planned properly. The suggestive prescription is to look at test data coverage that can bring measurable value to agile testing; the resulting test cycle speed can surprise you.

Satya shares how a select set of test data management concepts such as data creation, data injection, data coverage, data naming conventions, data analytics can be utilized to build an automaton framework that is robust, repeatable leading to faster test cycles and to keep up with the agile deployment cycles.
