Overview of the event

Join us at Microservices, Containers & Serverless Day in Sydney happening on March 27th, 2020.

A microservice is a software development technique—a variant of the service-oriented architecture architectural style that structures an application as a collection of loosely coupled services.

The Microservices, Containers & Serverless day is a forum for the discussion of all aspects of Microservices, Containers & Serverless : their design, programming, and operations. Speakers from industry report success stories, best practices, current challenges, and will participate to discussion panels on the adoption and evolution of Microservices, Containers & Serverless.

Microservices, Containers & Serverless Day successfully brings together many practitioners and researchers interested in the software paradigm of Microservices, Containers & Serverless.

DevOps is known as the combining of responsibilities traditionally split between the developers and the operations team. However, there is also a very strong link to the world of Quality as well, at least, there should be. DevOps is an enabler for effective Quality Engineering throughout the development lifecycle as it enables testing to happen early and often, in a reliable manner. But what about the other way? How can we test our DevOps initiatives? How do we verify the Infrastructure as Code we set up is operating correctly? What confidence do we have that our Continuous Integration Pipeline is triggering when it should, using the right application versions?

I summarise the benefits DevOps brings to Quality Engineering. I explore some of the options for testing Infrastructure as code and compare when each should be used. I raise some questions for consideration in setting up your CI pipeline. And I recommend how your Quality team and DevOps team can best work together.

In the past few years, the technology industry has witnessed a rapid change in applied, practical distributed systems architecture that has led industry giants (such as Netflix, Twitter, Amazon, eBay, and Uber) away from building monolithic applications to adopting microservice architecture. The core reasons for its adoption by the enterprises has been driven in part by scalability challenges, lack of efficiency, slow developer velocity, and the difficulties with adopting new technologies that arise when complex software systems are contained within and deployed as one large monolithic application.

Today, Microservices have become mainstream in the enterprise – About 9 in 10 (91%) are currently using or have plans to use Microservices. For well over half (60%), adoption is already advanced. This includes close to a third (29%) who already depend on production Microservices for their application ,and a further third (31%) that have active pilot or a POC running.

This needs a clear strategy and governance to implement Microservices and API based architecture, linked closely to business needs. Hence It is important to learn how to unlock true potential of Microservices based architecture for a formal Microservices strategy

In this talk I am going to share my learning of developing microservices platform using Kubernetes. Some of the things we will talk about are :

● Deployment strategies - What are some of the best ways and tools one should use to achieve seamless deployments. We will talk about rolling deployments and how do they work.

● Traceability and Observability - With lots of containers running microservices it gets a bit tricky to track and debug when things go wrong. What are the best practices which can help us give better traceability and observability.

● Monitoring and Alerts - Monitoring and alerts play a vital role in having a robust and highly available microservices platform. We will delve into some of the tools and techniques used for the same.

● Logging -

● Security - How do we make sure that the microservices are secure. We will talk about things like Pod level Security, Linux Capabilities and how to set a proper security Context for the pods.

● Resilience and Failover - What are some of the techniques which can help to make the services resilient. We will talk about things like Circuit breakers and blue green deployments.

● Secrets Management - Sometimes handling secrets could be a nightmare; especially in the context of pods having access to tools like Vault. In this section we will discuss tools like Hashicorp Vault and how to use them properly.

● Database migrations - How to manage database migrations in a kubernetes platform, what are the strategies involved to make sure there is no downtime when doing a database migration.
