A microservice is a software development technique—a variant of the service-oriented architecture architectural style that structures an application as a collection of loosely coupled services.

The Microservices, Containers & Serverless day is a forum for the discussion of all aspects of Microservices, Containers & Serverless : their design, programming, and operations. Speakers from industry report success stories, best practices, current challenges, and will participate to discussion panels on the adoption and evolution of Microservices, Containers & Serverless.

Microservices, Containers & Serverless Day, Melbourne
X Topic Abstract

Data Operations (DataOps) started out as a best practice in data handling but now has begun its own. DataOps encompasses principles, tools, products to controls the flow of data from source to value.

Traditionally, data science & engineering have been exclusive to data analyst / engineer / scientist with lots of tedious tasks which were resource extensive. DataOps looks to liberate the heavy duty work in integration with multiple data sources, big data transformations / processing, workflow management, machine learning training / deployment and more.

With the growing popularity of serverless computing, it has never been better to implement DataOps at great scale and low cost. My presentation will discuss how these two trends can be combined to maximize value on data investment.

Moving to the cloud and deploying containers? In this talk I discuss both the mindset shift and tech challenges, with some common mistakes made in real-life deployments with some real life (albeit redacted) examples. We’ll also look at the results of my ongoing experiment of leaving unprotected containers open to the Internet and seeing what happens to them.

X Topic Abstract

As digital transformation and disruption permeates through all parts of the business, many organisation face the challenge that while pockets of their organization have embraced agility and flexibility, most their core and legacy areas are difficult to transform, and perceived as inflexible. This is further exacerbated as digital natives cause further market segmentation and start to position to take away lucrative parts of the business.

This talk will cover the key changes that organisations need to put in place to put in place as they start their digital decoupling journey, including evolving their operating model to embrace New Ways of Working (Agile, DevOps, Lean practices). Harshu describes the required changes through the lens of people, processes, and technology — outlining approaches that organisations can take to change from isolated legacy applications and hierarchical team structures to modern lightweight architectures and adaptive and Agile delivery models.

X Topic Abstract

In the ever evolving and dynamic world of software architecture, you will hear new buzz words every other month In the past couple of years microservice architectures have risen to prominence. Leading technology organizations, from Netflix to Facebook, are using microservice architectures to ensure they have the flexibility and nimbleness to rapidly adapt and respond to their customers. Microservices fits in well with Agile development and delivery.

X Topic Abstract

Application security is paramount when large enterprises think of migrating existing on premise apps to a public cloud. This session talks about tried and tested practices of embedding security testing in CICD pipelines, the various levels of security testing done especially for containers, their deployment controls into production and beyond. Learn how a zero tolerance to security vulnerabilities in large enterprises actually plays out in a full SDLC cycle. Also talks about how to build your applications and containers securely

X Topic Abstract

GraphQL is the fresh new data query language for APIs developed by Facebook (now Open Source).
GraphQL supports real time data updates via subscriptions and websockets. However, challenges arise once you start scaling out your API services and message buses (eg MQTT) must be used to ensure your consistency across your scaled machines. Suddenly, a simple websocket and data subscription becomes an increasingly complex problem to solve with unknown operating cost inflation.Serverless technologies have taught us many lessons around the ease of development and scalability of systems if we make them stateless and idempotent. Come with me and uncover a serverless subscription model for infinitely scaling GraphQL subscriptions, with a known cost/request?

A pragmatic approach to microservices security at scale: segmentation and access control

Topic Abstract

With enterprises moving from monolithic and traditional SOA architectures to a microservices architecture hoping to benefit from the increased agility this approach offers, care must be taken to avoid complexity sprawl. This workshop/talk will focus on the importance of defining a microservices segmentation architecture and a pragmatic access control model for managing the complexities of microservices at scale, including integration patterns between the service mesh, and the API management and identity gateway tools.
