X Topic Abstract

Technology always evolve from early stage. In most cases, a large complication logics are developed in a monolithic structure due to time constraint and unclear requirement. However, as time passed, it turned into legacy eventually. This is where we always heard about things are getting complicated, or things are easily broken when a new changes has introduced in a monolithic design.

This topic covered when a microservice should be preferred, when it shouldn’t, and what considerations are needed before we approach towards microservice from a traditional enterprise environment.

Financial exchanges are among the most demanding types of software systems in terms of throughput and response time. This talk will look at how some of the practices required when building a system using micro-services architecture, to deliver an exchange with sub-100µs end to end latency. This involves taking a ground-up approach and we will look into some of the decision making around fundamentals like networking, messaging, protocol use, state management, application design and reliability. We'll also cover technical details on some of the solutions including event sourcing and the development of the LMAX Disruptor.

In this session, Darren will discuss techniques that allow companies to simplify their core, while innovating, and reaping the benefits of modern tools.

Speaker Profile

Darren Sim is a polyglot full-stack Software Developer, Technical Lead, Conference Speaker, and Author.
Starting his career in IT since 2003, Darren has amassed over 15 years of professional work experiences in various capacities: Technical Lead, Software Architect, Consultant (Digital Strategy), Software Security Researcher, Technical Evangelist, Technical Trainer, Full-stack Software Developer, Software Test Engineer, Data Analyst and Web Designer.

During this time, Darren had the privilege to work with a variety of organisations, from Startups (10+ employees) to Multi National Corporations (10K+ employees) in the following industry verticals: Accounting, Digital Media, Education, Government, Insurance, Medical, Military, Retail, Security, Supply Chain, and Tech. Countries that Darren has worked in includes, New Zealand, Singapore and the United States (USA).

Darren draws upon a background of change management, design thinking, system thinking, lean/agile/learning theories and hands-on development to bring a unique perspective tightly blending technical, organisational and leadership concerns.

A firm believer that “an investment in knowledge pays the best dividends“, and “the best way to learn something is to teach“, Darren actively acquires new knowledge through the process of learning, sharing, unlearning, and relearning. Darren is frequently found sharing his learnings at conferences, and through writing. Over the years, Darren has received numerous accolades including the Oracle Corporate Singapore Prize, AVAYA Singapore Prize, Frontline Technologies Prize, IDA Singapore Course Silver Medal, Golden Web Awards, Microsoft’s Top Student Champion (FY06), the MYOB Ignition Awards and the Microsoft Most Valuable Professional (MVP) Award for 8 years in a row, placing him in the MVP Hall-of-Fame. Darren was the Asia Pacific Editor for the International .NET Association (INETA), an invited member of the Microsoft Developer Guidance Web Advisory Council and an invited technical expert to the United Nations (UN) Expert Group Meeting on Public Private Partnerships (PPP) and MDGs implementation ’09, held in Geneva, Switzerland.

Educated in Singapore, Darren received his Diploma with Merit in Information Technology from Temasek Polytechnic and his Bachelors of Science in Information System from the Singapore Management University. Darren was a valedictorian, university scholar, student leader, teaching assistant, as well as a research assistant.
