The "deep" in "deep learning" refers to the number of layers through which the data is transformed. Deep Learning is a new area of Machine Learning research, which has been introduced with the objective of moving Machine Learning closer to its original goals. Building a robust data architecture in the context of the business provides an edge on deriving insights through visualisation.

I will present the journey of Getsmarter from no data capability to leveraging machine learning and data science to derive business value from sales and marketing initiatives, to providing value to our students.

Speaker Profile

Schoeman Loubser is Vice President of Technology at 2U, Inc. He leads the Systems and Technology division in Cape Town and is responsible for all technology required to run 2U’s short course business, GetSmarter. Additionally his team develops certain applications for the group's graduate degree business.

Having worked on various technology projects for the SA Government and Defence Force, he started his working career as a Naval Technical Officer, qualifying as a Weapons Electrical Engineering Officer (he also holds the rank of Lieutenant Commander in the Naval Reserves).

His qualifications include Master of Technology in Information Technology, and Bachelor of Technology in Electrical Engineering.

Establishing the data team at Getsmarter is a career highlight for him. Development-oriented, he inspires his team members to be successful in adding value to the business by being the best they can be.

Speaker Profile

Trained as a physicist with the application to space and plasma physics. As a physicist I took part in the South African National Antarctic Program (SANAP) where I visited and installed instrumentation on the Antarctic and Marion Island. Data from these locations were used to model the Earth's Plasma and magnetosphere where my data visualisation journey started. Today I am working for Capitec Bank as a Data Scientist. The theme in our Data Science department is to "help clients bank better, to live better" and thereby improve their financial lives.

Mariken will discuss her approach to visualizing uncertainty when approaching marketing strategies. She will discuss how she manages to the edges and the role intuition plays when it comes to data-based decision making.
