Data Visualisation Summit, Sydney
X Topic Abstract

With the advent of the Age of Information, there has been an explosion in data collection and storage. Data visualisation as a discipline is looking for ways to better communicate this data in a readily digestible way.
One set of tools that are providing us with the ability for better communication and interaction with data are immersive hardware and software aimed at creating a seamless interface between reality and virtual data. The overarching theme of these tools is “Mixed Reality”, and currently comprises primarily of VR (Virtual Reality) and AR (Augmented Reality).
By re-purposing game engine technology, we can "gamify" our interaction with data, and visually present information in intuitive 3D worlds. In addition to examples of VR created from virtual environments, this presentation will explore a range of virtual model examples where data is being visualised in a 3D contextualised environment.

X Topic Abstract

Data is the most valuable asset of any business, and perhaps the most ignored. Businesses across industries are drowning in data, yet unable to draw out the rich insights to the surface. Data visualisation unlocks these hidden insights to drive smarter decision making by bringing them to life, visually.
Joining the dots between multiple data sets allows a deep analysis across business systems and departments. This visual data storytelling provides actionable insights used to optimise sales, streamline processes, prevent missed opportunities and reduce risk. But with dozens of unique questions and use cases, how do leaders know which techniques to use? What should you keep in your data visualisation tool box to extract the best insights?
These are just some of the questions faced by business as they strive to make intelligent decisions in our data driven world. This presentation will attempt to answer these questions by highlighting the different types of data visualisation techniques, how to use them effectively, and demonstrate a real life example of how data visualisation can be put to work for your business.

X Topic Abstract

Storytelling has been there since the Stone Age and it will continue till our existence. From cave paintings, to canvas, to novels, to movies stories has always fascinated mankind. Although the methods have changed, the desire to tell and hear stories has remained unchanged, and still greatly impacts the way we look at life.

The similar analogy holds true for data storytelling, it can change our perception toward the B&W data we see, by adding context and emotion to it. Data can't speak for itself and need a medium to reach to its audience, data visualization with storytelling, provides the medium to it.

The storytelling aspect of data visualization can enhance its value by following aspects

a. Stories provide a structure – a beginning, middle and end - to the data
b. Stories helps to highlight the underlying message of the data
c. Stories are perfect medium to engage users and convince them

This presentation will showcase the various aspect of storytelling and its impact on data visualization. This talk will highlight how data visualization benefit from storytelling aspect and helps to connect the audience to the data on an emotional plane in order to gain buy-in. Picture: Below

X Topic Abstract

Optimisation problem are mostly solved as a mathematical abstract problem with nner output. Visualisation techniques have helped to do our initial discovery of the issues and perform right optimisation technique for the solution. Output and insights gets well highlighted through visualisation and that makes much easy to appreciate derived value from the solution.

X Topic Abstract

In today's 'Data-is-the-new-oil' world, there is no dearth of data and we are all racing for KPIs, scorecards and digital dashboards. However, although there has been good progress in our ability to gather and warehouse data, we still don't communicate the numbers effectively. If people who work with data don't know how to present it clearly, all effort of gathering and reconciling data is wasted. Hence, it is very important to understand how data should be presented for better communication, which is why understanding attributes of visual perception is so important

The talk will cover the following:

• Set the context of visual perception in story telling with data.
• Understanding why Visual Perception is so important in data communication.
• A few examples of the common mistakes made while visualizing data.

The differentiator that I bring to the table is my learning from Stephen Few. I have been trained by the Stephen Few in visual perception and visual analytics. Currently, I am the Head of Data Visualisation for Analytics8 in Sydney.
