The Potential Implications of Blockchain Technology for International Development and the BOP Markets
This talk will cover a broad overview of how blockchain technology and IoT will impact changes in agriculture, energy and banking services, and what that means for those in the global south. Blockchain and IoT technology offers the opportunity for a large swath of rural farmers to participate in regional and global supply chains more effectively by leveraging smart contracts. Coupled with IoT devices and innovations in blockchain banking services, small-scale farmers, urban and rural, can have unprecedented access to micro-capital, micro-insurance policies to protect against unforeseen circumstances, and take full-advantage of IoT devices to monitor field conditions and increase productivity. This has major implications for farmers in the global south, especially where countries continue to struggle with poverty and economic inequality. These technologies will also help the world’s poor better mitigate the hardship of changing climates. These trends in blockchain and IoT can be appropriately applicable to agriculture as well as other prominent sectors of developing economies. In conclusion, innovations in blockchain and IoT technology can help companies tap into the nearly $4 trillion in purchasing power the bottom-of-the-pyramid current possesses.
